In truth, it had been difficult to avoid them, even in that first week when she'd barely come out of her room. It seemed as though everyday someone was coming by to check on her, bringing flowers or food or well-wishes, having to be gently turned away by her mother, who had lied with all the aplomb of a Capitol native, saying Annie was in bed with a fever.
